However, an overhaul policy makes sense only if  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;\beta &amp;gt;1&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; . It does not make sense to implement an overhaul policy if  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;\beta &amp;lt;1&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  since wearout is not present. If you assume that there is a point at which it is cheaper to overhaul a system than to continue repairs, what is the overhaul time that will minimize the total life cycle cost while considering repair cost and the cost of overhaul?&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Denote  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{C}_{1}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  as the average repair cost (unscheduled),  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{C}_{2}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  as the replacement or overhaul cost and  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{C}_{3}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  as the average cost of scheduled maintenance. Scheduled maintenance is performed for every  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  miles or time interval. In addition, let  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{N}_{1}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  be the number of failures in  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;[0,t]&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  and let  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{N}_{2}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  be the number of replacements in  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;[0,t]&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; . Suppose that replacement or overhaul occurs at times  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;T&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; ,  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;2T&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; ,  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;3T&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; . The problem is to select the optimum overhaul time  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;T={{T}_{0}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  so as to minimize the long term average system cost (unscheduled maintenance, replacement cost and scheduled maintenance). Since  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;\beta &amp;gt;1&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; , the average system cost is minimized when the system is overhauled (or replaced) at time  &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;{{T}_{0}}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;  such that the instantaneous maintenance cost equals the average system cost.&lt;br /&gt;
